The Lies of P is new dark twist on the story of Pinocchio. Taking place during the Belle Époque era (late 19th century), Pinocchio (who, for some reason, makes me think of Timothee Chalamet) is on a quest to find Geppetto in hopes of becoming human.
What we Know
So, what do we know about this game? Unfortunately, not too much, yet. But we can expand upon the information provided on Steam. Game director Choi Ji-Won sat down with the Japanese publication 4Gamer and answered a few questions.
On the Lies of P Steam page, it's said that lying plays a huge role in the game. Makes sense, as in the original fairy tale, Pinocchio's nose grows every time he lies, but what about here? Ji-Won goes on to say in the interview that there are three different endings depending on how the player interacts with different NPCs. What's more, each of those three endings hold a piece of the story that acts as puzzle pieces for the bigger picture.
"If you choose to lie, you will earn humanity points... But P, the puppet, does not act like a doll, and when he lies for the first time, all of these actions and thoughts become opportunities to gain humanity points."
Ji-Won also goes on to say that there isn't a penalty for lying, as he believed that players should freely choose how the story plays out without feeling penalized for their choices. In fact, he goes on to say that they reversed the original story of Pinocchio by making it so that lying is a human thing to do.
"...To lie is to express who you are, and we have made this the main theme of the game."
Weapon System
The Steam page says that there are a multitude of ways to combine weapons.
Ji-Won confirms this and goes on to say that they have prepared more than 30 different unique sets and players can experience more than 100 different weapon combinations. Better be prepared to strategize!
"There are not only swords, spears, shields, hammers, and axes, but also other strange weapons that have never been experienced before. We designed it so that players can feel the diversity of individuality as much as possible."
Release Date
The big question is when is this game going to be released? Back in August 2022, Ji-Won said the game was 70 percent finished. Now, they are working on polishing the game and making sure it runs smoothly. It is expected to release sometime in 2023 on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. It will also be available day one on the Xbox Game Pass. Rejoice!
I don't know about you, but to me, this definitely is a game to keep an eye on.
