My Thoughts on Star Wars: Outlander [SPOILER FREE]

...May the Force strengthen the hand that is just!

Published in 1999, Timothy Truman's Star Wars Outlander tells the story of newly appointed Jedi Master Ki-Adi-Mundi who is tasked by the Jedi Council to search for a Jedi Knight by the name of Sharad Hett, who was believed to be dead, in hopes to bring him back to the Order.

Timothy Truman is a long-time comic book author who has other Star Wars stories:

  • Emissaries to Malastare

  • The Hunt for Aurra Sing

  • Star Wars: Bounty Hunters - Aurra Sing

(Sorry for my random thumb appearing in the picture)

I have read many books based in the Star Wars universe, but I've never read any of the comics. I've now began a small collection, but my very first in-store comic book purchase is Outlander. The reason I decided to start with this one, is because I was hooked by the summary!

I mean, a Tusken Jedi? That sounds awesome! I can withstand a little Ki-Adi-Mundi if it means I get to see a lightsaber wielding, force-using Tusken Raider!

Praise and Critique

The beginning of the comic starts off strong. It isn't until we get to the middle of the story where things get...not stale, but unfulfilling. It really felt like there was much more to explore behind Sharad Hett and we really don't get much to digest. That's a shame, because he is a fascinating character with a rich history.

The end of the comic felt pretty rushed as well in my opinion. What I got was really exciting, but it ended way to soon and once again, it came off as unfulfilling and slightly disappointing. 144 pages was just not enough for this story.

The art is fantastic. The usage of colors made the scenes very dynamic and engaging. Even if one were to not really enjoy the story, I feel that anyone could at least appreciate the art style.

Do I Recommend This?

Yes, I recommend this comic. As I mentioned before, this is my first Star Wars comic book, and I enjoyed it. You don't need extensive knowledge of the Star Wars Universe or have read any of the previous comics to understand the story here. It's simple and gets straight to the point. Plus, the art is great, too!

Final Rating and Thoughts

I give it a 7.5/10. While this comic came out many years ago and has a few story issues, it still has a lot to offer to new fans of Star Wars. Ki-Adi-Mundi is not a fan favorite by any means. In fact, he's a pretty terrible Jedi in my opinion, but that doesn't take away from the story. This is a definite must-read, at least for people who are fascinated by the Tuskens like I am.

Also, I can't get over Ki-Adi-Mundi in that wizard hat. He truly does look like a space wizard.
